Our Mission
It’s our mission to provide both locals and visitors with the best and largest selection of books about New Mexico and the Southwest, as well as books by New Mexico authors. Our topics include history, Native America, Hispanic interest, the Old West, children’s books, cooking, art, biography, field guides, and fiction, including mystery novels. We pride ourselves on handpicking books we like for our store. We’ve personally read or have great knowledge about nearly every title on our shelves. As Jim says, “we can tell you about the book, but we won’t give away the ending”. No matter what your specific interest, we can find the right book for you or a loved one.
Our History
In 1974, Jim Hoffsis “retired” from a twenty year stint at a giant oil company and moved from Billings, Montana to Albuquerque, New Mexico with his wife, Joe Ann and son, John. He became the new owner of a small souvenir, gift, and jewelry shop on the plaza in Old Town Albuquerque called Treasure House. In 1993, John opened his own shop on the fringe of Old Town called Stagecoach Books, specializing in New Mexico books. After working twelve hour days, for nealy 25 years, Jim and Joe Ann decide to retire in 1999, and let John move his books into the shop on the plaza. At that moment, Treasure House Books & Gifts was born. Now, John runs the store with his wife, Susan and Jim, who while still “retired”, is at the shop every day to help out and tell his world-famous jokes and stories to customers.
Accolades
Treasure House’s devotion to New Mexico books & authors has earned it some prestigous accolades, including the New Mexico Book Association’s 2012 Book in Hand Award and the 2014 New Mexico/Arizona Book Awards Friend of New Mexico Books Award. We have also ranked in the top three for the Best New Mexico Book Store category in the Weekly Alibi’s Best of Burque poll in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and in the top five for the Best Bookstore category in the Albuquerque the Magazine’s Best of the City poll in 2014, 2015, 2016, 20017, 2018 and 2019. We are also listed on atlasobscura.com as one of the 62 Best Bookstores in the World.
